I don't know why this has not already happened, so much talk and such little action from our state representatives. Something should be done to progress this movement and have more recognition given to the devoted staff and students in this excellent facility.

I disagree with the Anonymous comment below. I believe WIT exceeds the work conducted by some universities in the state such as NUIM, NUIG. It certainly has a higher profile - it may be that re-designation is a threat to other such universities.

There is excellent chemical & physical scientific research in WIT but I am not of the opinion that University status is currently warranted. I have met with reps from WIT on many occasions as I studied my PhD in Dublin and have close working links with the WIT. FUSE has a problem in that they all they see if the university status, not the merit. One day...but foolish to think now

It is already an excellent third level institution with high standards and merits this status. Furthermore, it is long over due for this part of the country and would be of huge benefit to both the economy and to the population in general.

John Maher - Wed 07 May 2008 10:59pm

A university would deliver: - more critical thinking about the way we conduct ourselves in the region, socially, politically and economically - a less rigid employment structure within the institution itself - more students from abroad with a similar effect for the economy as with any other export of services - a greater capacity for accessing European funding - more opportunities for graduates - greater tax payments because more graduates will command higher salaries and this suoppprts social and economic development nationally Education has got to be about challenging the accepted wisdom and creating new understanding and knowledge platforms. We are proud of what we have achieved and we are ready to move to another platform with fresh expectations.

As a graduate of WIT, I feel that Waterford City and the South East desperately need a University. As a region, Waterford City and the South East have been disadvantaged over the years, compared to Cork, Limerick, Galway and of course Dublin. If WIT was given University status, it would benefit the South East region, in particular the future students who will attend, as well as the economic situation of the region.

The strongest argument in favour of a university for the S.E. is the geographical one: without one this region is disadvantaged in so many ways. WIT has the capacity and potential to become a first rate iniversity if it is given the status and the funding. The Govt should make the right decision based on the merits of the arguments made. Limerick, Cork and Galway already have universities: Waterford and the S.E. have waited too long already!

The south east has been woefully treated by all parties when in government - but we are all culpable for meekly accepting this. The South East must work together on securing a University as a first step to securing the economic development this region missed out on during the "Celtic Tiger" years.

I completed a business degree in WIT in 2000, the standard of education was excellent, something which is well recognised in industry. I subsequently joined a big 4 accountancy firm, completed proessional accountancy exams and I am currently a bank manager. I owe a great debt of gratitude to WIT. It is WIT's constant drive to improve & innovate, dedication to professionalism in education and vision for the future dictates that the college deserves University Status.

WIT is currently doing great things and has come a long way in a short period of time. They can only improve under full university status. The proposed name, however, while inclusive, lack character and identity. May I suggest incorporating "Ireland" in there somewhere. Perhaps: University of South East Ireland or South East University of Ireland? Good luck!

The ongoing neglect of economic development for the South-East area shows no sign of supportive action. If in the past Ireland has "bred children for export", currently the South-East breeds education talent for export to other regions / countries, with little opportunity to return.

As a Waterford born and Wexford raised writer, I want to urge the powers that be to facilitate this obviously dire need. I grew up in the 1970s, when everybody who wanted to better themselves had to leave to get a university education. After 15 years of a boom economy, it is inexplicable that government still has not put provision in place for this facility.

Karen Frampton - Wed 09 Apr 2008 5:18am

Only in Ireland will there be such resistance to provide a gateway for endless opportunity in a region, namely the South- East.By ignoring the need for a university not only current but future generations will miss out on gaining from having such a great opportunity on their doorstep. I am currently living in Australia, where their proactive approach to Learning means a university in almost every pocket of it's major cities. Come on Ministers, do your jobs and put this plan into action!

For far too long Waterford and the South East of Ireland has been overlooked in terms of development and economic investment. Recent events in the regional labour markets alone should make a strong argument in favour of university designation for WIT.

I would rather it to be named "Waterford University",however the regional model seems to be the preferred option at the moment. óne way or another it should prove to be a wonderful asset to the region

I fully support this cause as a parent living in the S.E.We need our tech. studies but we also need to look after all those who want to take other options while still being able to stay in their own region. It would also greatly enhance the region for industrial considerations and therefore improve our employment figures and grades.
